How to Wash Sports Bras Without Damaging Shape and Support?

Sports bras collect sweat, body oils, and deodorant during exercise. Regular washing keeps them fresh, but rough cleaning can stretch the band, twist removable pads, or weaken the fabric. A gentle routine helps protect the bra’s shape and support.
1. Read the Care Label First
Materials and construction vary, so always follow the instructions printed on the garment. If the label recommends hand washing, do not assume a machine cycle will be safe.
2. Prepare the Bra for Washing
- Fasten hooks so they do not catch on other clothes.
- Remove pads if the design allows it.
- Turn the bra inside out to help clean areas that touch the skin.
- Place it in a mesh laundry bag if you use a washing machine.
Wash sports bras with lightweight activewear instead of towels, jeans, or items with zippers. Heavy or rough clothing can pull on elastic and straps.
3. Use Cool Water and Mild Detergent
For hand washing, soak the bra briefly in cool water with a small amount of mild detergent. Gently press the fabric instead of twisting or scrubbing it. Rinse until the water is clear.
For machine washing, choose a cold, gentle cycle. Avoid bleach and fabric softener unless the care label specifically allows them. Fabric softener can leave a coating that affects how some performance fabrics handle moisture.
4. Dry It Without Stretching
Do not wring the bra. Press out extra water gently with a clean towel, reshape the cups, and lay the bra flat or hang it from the center front. Hanging a wet bra by one strap can stretch it unevenly.
Air drying is usually gentler than high heat. Keep the bra away from radiators and strong direct sunlight unless the care label says otherwise.
5. Reinsert Pads Carefully
Let the bra and pads dry completely before putting them back together. Smooth each pad inside its pocket and check that both sides face the same direction.
6. Store Sports Bras Loosely
Do not crush molded cups or keep the band stretched around other clothing. Lay bras flat or stack them with the cups supported.
Bottom line: Cool water, mild detergent, gentle movement, and air drying help a sports bra keep its shape. The care label should always be your final guide.
