How to Prevent Pilling on Your Yoga Sweatshirts?
Yoga sweatshirts are soft, cozy, and perfect for workouts or relaxing at home. Over time, some sweatshirts can develop small fabric balls called “pills.” Pilling happens when fibers rub together and form tiny knots on the surface. The good news is, you can prevent it with a few simple steps.
1. Choose High-Quality Fabrics
Sweatshirts made from cotton-polyester blends or fabrics with longer fibers are less likely to pill. Short fibers or cheap fabric tend to break and form pills faster.
2. Wash Inside Out
Turning your sweatshirt inside out before washing protects the outer surface from friction with other clothes. This simple step can reduce pilling significantly.
3. Use Gentle Wash Settings
Use cold water and the gentle or delicate cycle on your washing machine. Avoid heavy cycles that can stress fibers and create friction.
4. Skip the Dryer When Possible
High heat from dryers can weaken fibers and encourage pilling. Air-dry your sweatshirt on a flat surface or hang it up. If you must use a dryer, choose the lowest heat setting.
5. Avoid Rough Fabrics and Zippers
When washing, avoid mixing sweatshirts with rough fabrics like towels, jeans, or items with zippers. These can rub against the sweatshirt and cause pilling.
6. Use Fabric Softeners Sparingly
Fabric softeners can sometimes coat fibers and help reduce friction. Use them occasionally, but don’t overdo it as they can affect moisture-wicking properties.
7. Remove Pills Carefully
If pilling occurs, use a fabric shaver or gently pick off pills with scissors. Don’t pull hard, as this can damage the fabric further.
By choosing the right fabric, washing carefully, and handling your yoga sweatshirt gently, you can keep it soft and smooth for longer. A well-maintained sweatshirt looks better and feels more comfortable for every activity.
