How to Use Tennis Dress Pockets Without Affecting Movement
Pockets can make a tennis dress more practical, especially when you want to carry an extra ball, a key, or another small essential. However, the location, opening, and weight inside the pocket can change how the liner feels while you run. Using the pocket selectively helps preserve comfort and keeps the dress balanced during play.

Identify the pocket design
Many active dresses place a pocket on one side of the built-in shorts. Others include a waistband compartment or a small hidden pocket near the back. Check the opening direction and depth before putting anything inside. A downward-opening ball pocket is used differently from an upright phone pocket, so follow the product description when available.
Carry only what the pocket can support
A tennis ball is light and usually works well in a fitted short pocket. A large phone, heavy key ring, or wallet can bounce, pull the liner downward, and create uneven pressure. For competitive or fast movement, leave nonessential items in a secure bag beside the court. If you must carry a key, separate it from sharp accessories that might press into the skin or damage the fabric.
Balance access with security
- Insert one item at a time during your first test.
- Walk, jog, and perform several side steps.
- Confirm that the pocket opening stays closed.
- Make sure the item does not rub a seam against your leg.
- Practice removing a ball without twisting the shorts.
Right-handed players do not automatically need a right-side pocket. Try both sides if the design offers them and choose the one you can reach naturally between points.
Protect fabric from stress
Do not force an item through an opening that is smaller than the object. Repeated overstretching can reduce recovery at the pocket edge. Empty every pocket before washing, then reshape it gently while the dress is damp. Avoid storing the dress with heavy items inside, because long-term tension may distort the liner.
Make a court-ready check
Before play, place your chosen item in the pocket and complete several full-speed movements. Check whether the skirt catches on the object or whether the liner rotates. If anything shifts, lighten the load or move the item to a court bag. A useful tennis dress pocket should hold a small essential securely without changing your stride, concentration, or confidence.
