How to Keep Thumb Holes from Stretching in Long Sleeve Workout Tops
Thumb holes can help long workout sleeves stay in place, but the opening carries repeated tension whenever you dress, stretch, or remove the top. Pulling too hard, wearing the sleeve when it is too short, or hanging a wet garment by the cuffs can gradually distort the edge. Gentle use and correct fit are the best protection.

Check sleeve length before using the opening
Put the top on and let both arms rest naturally. The thumb hole should reach your hand without pulling the shoulder seam downward or tightening across the palm. Raise your arms, bend your elbows, and reach forward. If the cuff feels strained in every position, leave your thumb out or compare the garment with another size or sleeve length.
Insert and remove your thumb gently
- Smooth the sleeve toward the wrist.
- Locate the opening without tugging its edge.
- Guide the thumb through slowly.
- Remove it before taking off the top.
- Support the cuff with your other hand.
Do not use the thumb hole as a handle for pulling the entire sleeve into place. Jewelry, long nails, and rough equipment can also catch the stitching, so check your hands before dressing.
Reduce tension during exercise
Some movements create more pull across the hand than others. During push-ups, planks, racket sports, or weight training, test whether the cuff presses between the thumb and index finger. If you notice rubbing or strong tension, fold the cuff back or remove the thumb until the movement is complete. Comfort is more important than keeping the feature in use throughout every activity.
Wash and dry with the cuff protected
Follow the care label, turn the top inside out, and wash it with similar lightweight fabrics. Fasten exposed zippers on other garments and consider a mesh laundry bag for delicate construction. Never hang a saturated top from its thumb holes. Reshape the cuffs gently and dry the garment using the method allowed by the label.
Inspect before the damage grows
Look for loose threads, widening, or a small split near the opening. Stop pulling at damaged stitching and consult a qualified repair professional if needed. Regular fit checks and low-tension handling help the thumb holes remain smooth without forcing the rest of the sleeve out of shape.
