How to Wash and Dry Activewear Jumpsuits Without Losing Stretch
Activewear jumpsuits rely on elastic fibers to stretch, recover, and hold their shape. High heat, heavy agitation, fabric softener, and rough surfaces can shorten the life of those fibers. A gentle wash routine helps the garment stay smooth and supportive for longer.

Check the care label
Always follow the instructions attached to your garment. Fiber blends, trims, zippers, cups, and bonded seams may require different care. When the label gives a temperature or drying method, use it before any general recommendation.
Prepare the jumpsuit
- Close zippers, hooks, and snaps.
- Remove pads when the label recommends separate washing.
- Turn the garment inside out.
- Place strappy or delicate styles in a mesh laundry bag.
- Wash with similar colors and smooth activewear, not towels, denim, or exposed hardware.
Wash soon after a sweaty workout when possible. If you cannot wash immediately, let the garment air out instead of leaving it damp in a closed gym bag.
Use cool water and a gentle cycle
Cool water is usually kinder to elastane. Choose a mild detergent and use only the recommended amount. Too much can leave residue that traps odors and makes fabric feel stiff. Skip fabric softener unless the care label allows it; softener can coat performance fibers. Avoid chlorine bleach because it can weaken elastic fibers.
Dry with low stress
Air-drying is often safest. Reshape the jumpsuit gently and lay it flat on a clean rack or hang it without stretching the straps. Keep it away from radiators and strong direct sunlight. If the label permits machine drying, use the lowest heat setting and remove the garment promptly.
Avoid common mistakes
- Do not wring or twist the garment.
- Do not iron stretch fabric unless the label permits it.
- Do not use a hot dryer to speed drying.
- Do not store the jumpsuit while damp.
Once completely dry, fold it loosely or hang it without pulling on the straps. Cool water, mild detergent, low friction, and careful drying are the key habits for preserving stretch and shape.
