How to Layer a Tennis Dress for Cool or Windy Weather

Updated on Sep 07, 2026

A tennis dress can remain useful when the temperature drops if each layer supports movement and can be adjusted easily. The goal is to stay comfortable during the cooler start of a session without trapping too much heat after you warm up. Begin with thin, breathable pieces and add protection where wind affects you most.

Tennis dress ready for cool-weather layering

Start with a close, smooth base

If the dress has open armholes or a low back, a fitted long-sleeve performance top can add warmth. Choose a neckline and seam placement that sit smoothly beneath the dress. Extra fabric should not bunch under the arms or pull across the shoulders when you serve. On milder days, a light sports bra and the dress's built-in liner may be enough.

Add coverage for your legs

Fitted shorts, capri leggings, or full-length leggings can work under some tennis dresses. Check that added waistbands do not stack uncomfortably beneath an attached liner. If the dress already includes shorts, thin leg warmers or tall athletic socks may add targeted warmth with less bulk. Always test the combination through lunges and side steps.

Choose a removable outer layer

  • Use a lightweight zip jacket for easy ventilation.
  • Look for sleeves that stay clear of your grip.
  • Select a hem that does not catch on the skirt.
  • Keep pockets light so the jacket stays balanced.
  • Remove the layer before it becomes damp inside.

A front zip is convenient because you can open it gradually during warm-up. In wind, a close-fitting jacket often moves more predictably than a loose sweatshirt.

Plan for changing conditions

Bring one packable layer even if the forecast looks mild. Shaded courts and evening sessions can feel cooler than the general temperature suggests. A visor or cap can help with low sun, while a light headband can protect the ears. Avoid loose scarves or accessories that could interfere with your racket, vision, or footwork.

Run a movement and temperature check

Warm up for five to ten minutes, then decide which layer to remove. Stretch both arms overhead, rotate through a serve motion, and take several quick lateral steps. The outfit should not pull the dress upward or restrict the inner shorts. By choosing slim layers and adjusting them as your body warms, you can keep wearing a tennis dress comfortably through cool starts and breezy court conditions.
